Saturday 3rd February saw the 3rd North By North West (NXNW) take place; which if you don’t know is our musical showcase partnership with pals Tinderbox, and now Intercultural Youth Scotland. These evenings take place at Leith Depot and are designed to allow young musicians from all over the city a platform to play music, and network with each other. This is now the 3rd time the event has sold out!

The evening was compered by Currie native and young rapper, Devilish J, who did a great job keeping up the energy on the evening and entertaining us with his own songs to start the evening. We then saw a number of new young people on the scene play songs on the open stage section of the evening including Nina Watt, Tom Doig, Propoganda 101, The Kid Great, and Kieran Crosbie – who all caught the eye (or more pertinently, ear).

(Opening act, The Buzzkills)

First up saw the Buzzkills take the stage, who have comeĀ  up through the Tinderbox hub music nights, and although new to playing, these 12 year olds (mental) played some punk and emo staples with a devil may care attitude that only Punk music inspires.

(IYS artist Nikhita, and their guitarist Dylan)

Next up we had Nikihita take the stage and really relax us all with their ethereal melodic sensibilities and a sound reminiscent of SZA, Billie Martin, and Lucy Rose to name a few. An amazing voice and definitely one to watch!

Headliners Ecliptic are also new to playing original songs, although have been playing together as a unit from an early age, they met at Cannongate Youth’s Totally Sound project and been further supported by our Mixtape Music Club to write their own songs. They sound like a band from another time and and showcased their influences with covers of The Housemartins classic “Happy Hour”, Lana Del Ray, and Harry Nilsson. As you can see the audience were on board with their sound from the first to the last song!
